TALAPAW MOVEMENT
BUILDING EDUCATION
Our Mission
Work alongside those displaced by violence — especially students hiding in the forests of Karen State and along the border — to build pathways toward knowledge, safety, and self-determination, even in times of scarcity.

About Us
Karen State, also known as Kawthoolei, is a region in Myanmar and home to one and a half million ethnic Karen. Since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, Karen State has experienced an increase in armed conflicts and airstrikes.
The name of our movement is inspired by a beloved dish from Karen cuisine — a hearty rice soup made with bamboo shoots and vegetables.
When Karen families living in the forest have little or no food, they head into the wild to gather what they can, coming together to prepare Talapaw. In the same spirit, our movement is about unity, resilience, and creating something meaningful together — even when resources are scarce.
The Talapaw Movement is committed to supporting a new generation of Karen youth who are hiding in the forests, determined to continue their education despite the ongoing conflict. Since early 2022, we have partnered with local authorities to provide housing and financial assistance to over 70 students — both within the forests of Karen State and in a refugee camp along the Thailand-Myanmar border — so they can pursue their studies and help rebuild their communities.
We have successfully conducted English and computer classes for over 400 students, built two student dormitories, and expanded a school building to accommodate 300 students. We’ve also delivered stationery and laptops—donated by friends overseas—to schools throughout the district. In addition, we are working with local authorities to establish a textbook office, a law school, a medical school, and a basic health course. We look forward to creating even more educational opportunities for a new generation of Karen youth.
